A WEBSITE FOR A NEW URGENT CARE BRAND

MedWise Urgent Care, a new clinic in the Oklahoma area, needed a website to accompany their new brand and on-site design. Critical to offer patients clear information for finding assistance for urgent health concerns, the Callahan team and I knew we needed to accommodate ease and efficiency in the users’ website experience. As lead UX designer, I guided the agency through the UX process to create a solid experience for patients to find healthcare help.

information architecture and wireframing

site map

Patients who need urgent medical care want simple, quick information. This was our foundation for creating a streamlined sitemap to deliver straightforward information to patients.

We knew our audience would most likely come to the website to do 3-4 things: find a location, make an appointment, check what services were offered or pay a bill. These main tasks was my guide for building a structure to accommodate easy-to-find information.

Information architecture (site map).

medium-fidelity wireframes

Once the simple sitemap was established, I created a medium-fidelity wireframe that reflected exactly our intension when creating the architecture. A simple top navigation, minimal content that gave the audience logical answers to their questions and discoverable, scannable font styles and elements.

Both desktop and mobile accommodated this goal of giving the user clear, quick information.

Last, knowing that our audience would likely be predominantly on mobile devices, I emphasized creating an interface that showcased “quick links” in the top nav and elements to allow for possible one-handed actions - both decisions allowing the user to accomplish efficient actions during times when they weren’t feeling well or needed to seek medical assistance quickly.

user testing

With a limited budget and timeline, we ran remote, qualitative, moderated user testing on the medium-fidelity prototype, testing 10 participants on both desktop and mobile devices. Observing users interacting with the prototype using pre-defined tasks, we found that testers had few issues with the interface. We were pleased to see that only minor iterations were needed to prepare us for the visual design phase.

design consultation

I collaborated and consulted with the Callahan art directors in this phase to help bring the wireframe prototype to life, ensuring that the integrity of the user experience stayed in tact. Since we’d tested the wireframe prototype, it was important that the visual design not stray too far from what we’d tested. While this created some intense conversations between me and the designers, we were able to come to some good solutions that married good UX with beautiful visual design.

summary

When patients need medical care urgently, a streamlined, easy-to-read, straightforward website is key. Guided by this principle, we showcased quick links, effortless interactions and simple content styles. Solid user experience on both desktop and mobile, this website will provide MedWise Urgent Care the platform they need to bring their audience quick, pertinent information during times of critical need.
