PROJECT Flint STEM Camps Website Design
DURATION 4-6 months
UX DESIGN SERVICES

With the rise of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), Flint Education set out to build a camp-in-a-box program for educators to run their own camp, start to finish. We needed to build a website for Flint that housed, not only the step-by-step dashboard for camp directors to use as a guide to building their camp, but to also showcase Flint's innovative approach to spark interest in educators and kids alike. What an exciting project to take on!

Knowing we had three different audiences to design for, it was critical that we establish a clear structure to house the slight nuances of each group - Students, Educators, and Parents. The information architecture (site map) and wireframing then worked hand in hand to establish the framework for providing clear content about the camps.

Information architecture (site map)
I recommended a step-by-step dashboard where camp directors could walk through clear instructions to planning, recruiting, and running their own camp. Users could log into their account and see a personalized, detailed dashboard of each step, from signing an agreement to printing signs to guides for finding student helpers and much more!

Working directly with the art director and graphic designer, I provided UX consultation throughout their design process. As they created the look and feel of the Flint website, I made recommendations and suggestions that helped ensure that the design meshed with both the wireframes and user testing results.

We ran in-person user testing on both the wireframes of this site as well as the staging dev site with real users - educators who would be likely to sign up to be a camp director.
The results were enlightening and useful to make modifications to the experience of the site before launch, ensuring that the three audiences would navigate the site effortlessly.
Marrying lively, fun design with utilitarian features created a result that will ensure the Flint audiences will have an excellent website experience. Walking a camp director through setting up a summer camp, using this simple dashboard method makes this website a one-of-a-kind site for STEM camps. Spark some interest!
